On June 21, we join communities across Canada in recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to celebrate and honour the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

This day provides an opportunity to reflect on the enduring strength, resilience, and leadership of Indigenous communities while reaffirming the importance of continued learning, understanding, and meaningful reconciliation.

At Cochrane Sinclair, we recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing journey. It requires listening, learning, and building relationships rooted in respect. We believe that acknowledging and celebrating Indigenous cultures and perspectives helps strengthen the communities in which we live and work.

“As an organization, we believe that fostering an inclusive workplace begins with education, understanding, and a willingness to listen,” says Kent Brown, Chief Operating and Human Resources Officer. “National Indigenous Peoples Day is an important opportunity to recognize the contributions of Indigenous Peoples and to reflect on how we can continue building a culture grounded in respect, equity, and meaningful connection.”

The legal profession has an important role to play in supporting reconciliation through advocacy, education, and access to justice. As legal professionals, we are committed to fostering an environment where Indigenous voices, experiences, and perspectives are acknowledged and respected.

“As lawyers, we have a responsibility to understand the histories that have shaped our communities and legal systems,” says Sonny Cochrane, K.C., Co-Managing Partner. “National Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to celebrate the cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples while reflecting on how we can continue learning, listening, and building stronger relationships through respect and understanding.”

Across Canada, we have the privilege of working alongside clients, businesses, organizations, and communities with diverse experiences and perspectives. Recognizing and appreciating those perspectives helps us better serve our clients and contribute positively to the communities where we practice.

“Across British Columbia and throughout Canada, we have the privilege of working with individuals, businesses, and communities from diverse backgrounds,” says Max Faille, Managing Partner, Vancouver Office. “National Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous cultures and traditions while reflecting on how greater understanding and stronger relationships benefit us all.”

Today, we encourage our team members, clients, and community partners to take time to learn about Indigenous histories and cultures, attend local events, support Indigenous businesses and organizations, and reflect on the role each of us can play in fostering understanding and respect.

On behalf of everyone at Cochrane Sinclair, we extend our gratitude to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples for their enduring contributions to our communities and our country. We remain committed to listening, learning, and fostering meaningful relationships that support a stronger and more inclusive future for all.
