Amory Hall Elected to the Heiltsuk Tribal Council: A Leader in Indigenous Governance

Cochrane Sinclair is proud to celebrate the achievements of Amory Hall, who has been elected as Councillor for the Heiltsuk Tribal Council. This historic milestone comes with a record 51% voter turnout, underscoring the strength and engagement of the Heiltsuk Nation in shaping its leadership and future.

A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy

As a proud member of the Haíɫzaqv First Nation, Amory Hall (Skagalees) has built his career on advocating for Indigenous governance, sovereignty, and self-determination. His recent election to the Heiltsuk Tribal Council is not only a recognition of his deep commitment to community leadership—it’s a testament to his ability to bridge legal expertise with cultural responsibility in ways that drive meaningful and lasting change.

Raised with a strong sense of purpose and community identity, Amory's path has always been guided by his roots. From an early age, he understood the importance of Indigenous voices being at the forefront of legal and political conversations. This awareness led him to pursue a career in law where he could support his Nation and others in reclaiming power, land, and governance.

In his legal practice, Amory specializes in Indigenous law, advising First Nations governments, political organizations, businesses, and entrepreneurs on matters related to Aboriginal and treaty rights, First Nation taxation, governance, and economic development. His work is grounded in the belief that Indigenous communities should have full agency over their futures—and the tools and representation to uphold their rights in all sectors. His nuanced understanding of legal frameworks, both within and outside colonial systems, positions him as a strong advocate for policies that honour self-governance and cultural continuity.

About the Heiltsuk Tribal Council

The Heiltsuk Tribal Council is the elected governing body for the Heiltsuk Nation, based in Bella Bella, British Columbia. It plays a vital role in overseeing governance, stewardship of land and marine resources, cultural preservation, and economic advancement. The Council works with a strong sense of accountability to the community, ensuring that decisions reflect both the traditions of the Heiltsuk people and the evolving needs of the Nation.

Its core priorities include:

  • Cultural Preservation – Protecting and revitalizing Heiltsuk traditions, language, and practices.
  • Land and Resource Stewardship – Managing lands and waters in accordance with Heiltsuk law, sustainability principles, and ancestral teachings.
  • Self-Governance and Economic Growth – Advancing autonomy through legal, political, and economic action.

With Amory Hall now serving as Councillor, his legal insight and policy background will help support the Council’s mission in all of these areas, with a particular focus on strengthening governance systems and community-led development initiatives.

A New Chapter in Indigenous Leadership

Amory’s election represents more than a personal milestone—it reflects a broader shift in community-driven leadership. With a record 51% voter turnout, the Heiltsuk Nation demonstrated not only unity and engagement but a strong commitment to shaping the future through democratic participation.

As Councillor, Amory will work alongside community members, Elders, and fellow leaders to help drive policy reform, implement community programs, and push forward legal strategies that reinforce the Nation’s sovereignty. His lived experience as an Indigenous professional combined with his extensive legal background uniquely positions him to contribute to the continued advancement of the Heiltsuk Nation.
